Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry Syrup

If you’re reading this, it probably means it’s that time of the year… Cooler Weather, Soup Season, and also Sniffle Season. A favorite natural remedy to keep on hand in our house is homemade elderberry syrup. While you can buy elderberry syrup in the store,  most commercial products contain unnecessary preservatives or thickeners to yield a thick syrup. There’s something special about homemade elderberry syrup.  Elderberries are  packed with vitamin C, dietary fiber and antioxidants- phenolic acids, flavonols, and anthocyanins. They make for a powerful natural immune boosting remedy.  When making this, elderberries have a very unique smell. Some might find it a little strong. I like to have a simmer pot on the stove (water, cinnamon, and orange peels) with a window cracked.

What to do with elderberry syrup? While it’s very popular to take elderberry syrup by the spoonful, you can also drizzle it over pancakes, add to smoothies, mix into yogurt (this makes for a fun purplish yogurt), add to a salad dressing, or add to oatmeal. So many fun ways to incorporate elderberry syrup.

Shopping list:

I use dried elderberries, here are two buying options non organic option and organic dried elderberry .

My favorite way to store elderberry syrup is in flip top bottles. They fit nicely in the fridge and are perfect to portion out the syrup into 3-4 bottles. These bottles are also perfect to gift to a friend.

If you haven’t stocked your spice rack with Ceylon Cinnamon, it’s time to do so. Ceylon cinnamon has a beautiful smell and taste, you’ll taste the difference.
